ドイツ出身の古典派音楽の作曲家、ルートヴィヒ・ヴァン・ベートーヴェン（1770年 – 1827年）が1808年に完成させた6番目の交響曲。第1楽章：約11分、反復の有無、指揮者の解釈や時代による演奏様式の変化により演奏時間には幅があります。
古典派交響曲としては異例の5楽章で構成されていて（一般的には４楽章構成）、第3楽章から第5楽章は連続して演奏され、全曲及び各楽章に描写的な標題が付けられるなど、ベートーヴェンが完成させた9つの交響曲の中では合唱を導入した交響曲第9番と並んで独特の外形的特徴を持っています。
また、徹底した動機展開による統一的な楽曲構成法という点で、前作交響曲第5番（作品67）とともにベートーヴェン作品のひとつの究極をなすともいわれています。
動機とはモチーフ（Motiv）のこと、楽曲の構造のなかで最も細かい単位のことです。有名なのはベートーヴェン第5番｢運命｣の”じゃじゃじゃじゃーん”というリズムの曲ですね。運命ではこのリズムが徹底的に繰り返しでてきます。
第6番｢田園｣では下記のリズムが徹底的に繰り返し展開されます。
第一楽章には、「田舎に到着したときの愉快な感情の目覚め」という標題が付されてい、ベートーヴェンが交響曲に標題を付けたのは初めて。（「運命」はベートーヴェンがつけたのではなく、自身が”運命は、こう扉をたたく”と語ったのを弟子が伝えてついた俗称です）
｢田園｣は散歩好きだったベートーヴェンが、ドイツのハイリゲンシュタットにある散歩道を歩いていたときに、思い浮かんだ曲だそうです。
こう聞くと、田園の風景を曲に表したものかな？と思いそうですが、じつはベートーヴェンは「この交響曲は絵画的な描写を表現したものではない。人々の心の中に起こる田園での喜びの感情を描いたものだ。」と語っています。
ベートーヴェンが自然を愛したことはよく知られており、「ハイリゲンシュタットの田園風景」に彼は深い愛を感じたのでしょう。
この曲を聴くときには、素晴らしい田園風景も思い浮かべつつ、その時の感情を想像して聴いてみましょう。
